Start with the two frond forms

Staghorn ferns commonly have two visibly different frond forms. The shield fronds, also called basal or sterile fronds, grow close to the base and may overlap around the supporting surface. The fertile fronds, also called foliar or strap fronds, extend outward and may be upright, hanging, forked, or curled depending on the species. Both forms are leaves, but their visible roles differ.

Some mature fertile fronds may form sori. The singular form is sorus. A sorus is a cluster of sporangia, and the sporangia produce spores. The position and appearance of sori can vary with the species and the shape of the frond. A fertile frond may also be present before it has formed a visible sori patch.

The base can contain another important structure: a rhizome. A rhizome is a stem, not a root. Roots grow from or near the rhizome. Because staghorn ferns are often epiphytic, the rhizome, roots, and new growth centers may be hidden by overlapping shield fronds or by the surface supporting the plant. The number of outward-growing fronds therefore cannot, by itself, tell you how many pups or plant units are present.

The gametophyte produces sperm and eggs. The sperm move through a film of water to reach an egg. After fertilization, a new sporophyte develops from the resulting zygote. That sporophyte is the stage that can eventually form a rhizome, roots, and fronds. The route can be written as:

This sequence is part of the fern’s alternation of generations. It is why a spore should not be described as a staghorn fern seed or as a tiny adult plant waiting to unfold. A pup is more than one newly unfolded leaf. Useful clues include another growth center and the gradual appearance of its own fronds, together with a connection to a rhizome and root system. The visible size and shape can vary with the species, age, and growth pattern, so a single photograph should not be treated as a fixed template for every staghorn fern.

Research on the commonly grown Platycerium bifurcatum describes asexual formation associated with adventitious root buds. In a clonal group, each developing ramet—a distinct plant unit—can form its own rhizome and roots. This helps explain why a pup is a young sporophyte unit, not a gametophyte produced by a spore and not merely a loose leaf.

Pups, offsets, and plantlets belong to the asexual or vegetative route. Because they arise from the parent’s existing growth system, they usually retain the parent’s genetic background. That is different from the sexual route, in which a spore enters the gametophyte and fertilization sequence before a new sporophyte forms.

It is also a mistake to assume that every staghorn fern produces many pups. P. bifurcatum is a familiar example of a species that can form multiple plant units and clumps. By contrast, the National Museum of Natural Science describes the queen staghorn fern, Platycerium wandae, as having a single growth bud. A 2025 PLOS ONE comparison places Ridley’s staghorn fern, Platycerium ridleyi, in a more solitary growth pattern. These are not interchangeable descriptions: a single bud refers to a growth point, while solitary refers to a species’ growth pattern. Other members of Platycerium may produce few obvious offsets or none at all. Sori position, frond form, and the tendency to form pups can all vary across the genus. A ring of pups on one plant does not establish a rule for every staghorn fern.

Division: a horticultural method within the asexual route

Division is a horticultural term for separating plant units that have already formed. It is not a new stage in the fern life cycle and not a separate reproduction route. When a staghorn fern has a pup or a clump with more than one connected growth center, horticultural language may describe separating an existing unit from the parent or from the clump as division.

This is the key relationship between the words. A pup is the young plant unit. Division is the method of separating that unit. In common wording, removing or separating an already formed pup is using the asexual route; the word division describes the separation, not a new kind of reproduction. The pup and division are related, but they are not synonyms.

The resulting plants usually retain the parent’s genetic background, so division remains within the asexual or vegetative context. It is closer to separating an existing plant group than to starting again with a spore, a gametophyte, gametes, fertilization, and a new sporophyte.

At the same time, a leaf or a small piece of tissue should not automatically be treated as an independent plant unit. Whether a portion can be understood as a continuing plant is connected to its growth center, rhizome, roots, and the growth pattern of that species.

If we simply say that “staghorn ferns can be propagated by spores or division,” a beginner may treat spores and division as two equivalent reproduction units, even though a spore is a biological starting structure while division is a horticultural method. The key is that a pup is the asexual plant unit: sexual reproduction can begin with a spore, while asexual reproduction uses a pup formed by the parent, and division is the method used to separate it.

Horticultural observation: locate the structure before naming it

When you look at a staghorn fern, place each structure in context before drawing a conclusion.

  • Start with the base and identify the overlapping shield fronds. Then examine the outward fertile fronds and the location of any sori. A brown patch by itself cannot tell you which structure you are seeing.
  • If a small unit appears near the parent, ask whether it has another growth center. A new frond may simply be emerging from the parent’s existing center; it is not automatically a pup, offset, or plantlet.
  • In a clump, look for multiple bases or growth centers. If an already formed unit is separated from the parent or clump, that is the horticultural situation described as division within the asexual route. The number of visible fertile fronds is not the same as the number of plant units, especially when the rhizome and roots are hidden.
  • Keep species differences in mind. Sori position, shield-frond form, fertile-frond posture, and the tendency to form pups can all vary across Platycerium. A feature seen in P. bifurcatum should be introduced as an example of that species, not as a rule for the entire genus.

This approach leaves room for uncertainty when the base is not visible. “Possible pup” can be a more accurate observation than treating every new leaf or brown area as proof of a separate plant.
