A strawberry is not a small red fruit growing on a tree. It is a low-growing herbaceous perennial that grows close to the soil and can send slender above-ground stems outward.
The familiar cultivated garden strawberry is commonly introduced as Fragaria × ananassa, a hybrid in the genus Fragaria and the rose family, Rosaceae. The name “strawberry” can also refer more broadly to other species in the genus Fragaria.
A strawberry plant has roots, a short stem, leaves, flowers, fruits, and runners. The interesting part is that what we think of as one “strawberry fruit” is actually made of the receptacle and small fruits called achenes.
Where is the stem? Start with the crown near the soil
Unlike a sunflower or tomato, a strawberry plant usually does not present one obvious upright main stem. Its main growth center lies close to the soil surface and is called the crown.
A crown is a short, compressed section of stem with very short internodes. Leaves, flower stalks, fruits, and runners are connected to the crown or arise nearby. The roots grow downward from the base of the crown.
Strawberry roots are often concentrated relatively close to the upper soil layers, but their actual depth varies with the soil, cultivar, and growing conditions. What matters here is remembering that a strawberry does have a stem; the stem is simply so short that leaf stalks and the leaf cluster can hide it.

One leaf can look like three: the trifoliate compound leaf
A strawberry leaf often appears to be three separate leaves. Look more closely and you can see that three leaflets are attached to the same leaf stalk and leaf base. Together, they make one trifoliate compound leaf.
The leaflets usually spread outward from the crown, and their margins are often serrated. Their basic work is still the work of a leaf: capturing light and carrying out photosynthesis to produce organic compounds the plant can use.

Flower clusters, flowers, and fruit: where does the red flesh come from?
Strawberry flowers are commonly white, with a yellow center. They usually have five petals as well as stamens and pistils. A flower is not only an ornamental part; it is the starting point for later fruit development.
Strawberry flowers often appear in an inflorescence, or flower cluster, with more than one flower grouped along a flower stalk or branching stalk. The exact branching pattern may be described differently in different botanical and horticultural references. Technical terms such as cyme may appear, but “inflorescence” or “flower cluster” is the clearest starting point for ordinary observation.
After pollination, several parts of the flower contribute to the developing strawberry. The part that causes the most confusion is the red, soft portion: it is not simply one ovary enlarging into an ordinary berry.
The red fleshy part is formed mainly by the enlargement of the receptacle, the base of the flower that supports other floral structures. The small dots on the surface are achenes. Each achene is a small fruit that contains a seed.
The many achenes develop from the individual ovaries of one flower. Together with the enlarged receptacle, they form what botanists commonly call an aggregate fruit, more specifically an aggregate accessory fruit. “Aggregate” refers to the many small fruits formed from one flower, while “accessory” indicates that tissue outside the ovaries, especially the receptacle, also forms much of the fleshy structure.
It is understandable to call the surface dots “strawberry seeds” in everyday conversation. For a precise botanical description, however, the achene and the seed inside it are different structures.

Runners: strawberry plants can form daughter plants on above-ground stems
A strawberry plant can produce a slender stem that extends along the soil surface. This stem is called a stolon, or more commonly a runner in horticulture.
A runner is not a root and not a tendril. It is an above-ground stem. Near one of its nodes, a small daughter plant, also called a plantlet, can begin to form. The daughter plant develops a small crown and leaves. When it makes contact with the soil, it can produce its own roots and gradually become capable of independent growth.
This is a form of vegetative propagation, also called asexual reproduction, because a new plant develops from part of the parent plant rather than from a seed. Different strawberry types and cultivars can differ in how readily they produce runners, but the relationship between an above-ground runner and a daughter plant is a useful example of asexual reproduction.

Observing a strawberry plant in a pot or planter
When observing a strawberry plant, start near the soil surface and look for the crown. Then follow the leaf stalks outward to the three leaflets that make up each trifoliate compound leaf.
If a slender stem extends across the soil and a small cluster of leaves appears at its end, you are likely seeing the relationship between a runner and a daughter plant, not a root exposed above the soil.
Flowers and fruits can also be observed as a sequence. First look for the white flower and yellow center. Later, look for the gradually enlarging young fruit, followed by the mature red fleshy structure and its surface achenes.
Seen this way, a strawberry is not just one fruit. It is a continuous story involving plant organs, flowering, fruit development, and reproduction.
